18/10/16 - Year 11 GCSE History

Year 11 GCSE History were delighted to welcome two passionate local historians, Una Walsh and Kevin Murphy, into their lesson today. They used their expertise to lead an interesting and useful interactive workshop on how to carry out online local research. Our pupils will now be able to put their knowledge into practise and research some of the people and places from their family history using the available census and townland records of the local area.

The Tharp Family made a visit to Newtownhamilton High School on Monday 17th October and delivered a short performance to our Year 8 pupils and also to visiting pupils from Newtownhamilton Primary and St. Michael’s Primary.

The American based Tharp family have been carrying out missionary work every year in the British Isles for 37 years and shared God’s message with pupils through some fun songs and dance routines. In return the Newtownhamilton High pupils taught the Tharp Family how to do ‘The Dab’.

14/10/16 - Year 12 GCSE Agriculture

Year 12 Pupils from the GCSE Agriculture class were given the opportunity to visit Clare Glen Seeds outside Tandragee as part of their Controlled Assessment Research Task.

Owner Tim McClelland answered questions from the students on Farm Safety and the use of Risk Assessment when farming with hazardous substances. The pupils gained great insight from the trip and it will be a massive aid to their final projects.
14/10/16 - The Earl & The 3 Hannahs

Our 3 Hannahs (Hannah Calvin, Hannah Gibson and Hannah Hughes) from Year 12 recently had the opportunity to meet with the Earl of Wessex in Hillsborough. The girls were representing Newtownhamilton Young Farmers and were invited to meet their royal host on behalf of the Grassroots Challenge Programme with Ulster Wildlife. They joined with other young people from Northern Ireland (including former Newtownhamilton High pupil Jason Clarke) to plant wildflowers in the beautiful grounds of Hillsborough Castle.

The girls also spoke to the Earl about the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme and explained that they had completed their bronze and silver awards with Newtownhamilton High and that they were now starting their gold award with the Young Farmers.

Well done girls.
