All pupils are able to apply to join The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) as they pass through Newtownhamilton High School.
We offer the award at two out of the three available levels: Silver and Bronze. At each level, four activities must be completed: a skill, a physical recreation, a volunteering and expeditions.
Skills followed include music, drama, art, design technology, cookery, chess, remote control aircraft construction, among others.
The volunteering section encourages participants to think of helping others; activities here include first aid, visiting the elderly, working in a charity shop, conservation work or leadership within their youth group or Sunday School.
Expeditions take place over two days (Bronze Award), three days (Silver Award) or four days (Gold Award) during the months of May and June each year. Though demanding, the participants greatly value the experience and sense of achievement of completing a DofE expedition in remote country that they have planned and carried out themselves.
In school, the teachers to contact regarding DofE are: Mrs Graham (M4), Mr Sloan (ST2) and Mr Chambers (ST1).
