30/01/15 - Art and Design 'True Colours' Visit

Our GCSE Art and Design students visited the annual ‘True Colours’ exhibition at the Ulster Museum, where they were inspired by the top GCSE and A Level Art work from all over Northern Ireland. The pupils were busy taking photographs of their favourite work and have many ideas for their own projects. A stop was also made at the FE McWilliam gallery in Banbridge to see a photographic exhibition by local artist Victor Sloan.
23/01/15 - SRC SKillbuild Success for Newtownhamilton High

Newtownhamilton High had a record number of 8 participants in the annual Southern Regional College (SRC) Skillbuild competition at the Greenbank campus on Thursday 22 January and they didn't disappoint as they managed to claim 4 prizes between them.

So congratulations goes to Andrew Geary (3rd in Electrical), Andrew Hughes (1st in Brickwork), Matthew Gibson (3rd in Plumbing) and Robert McBride (1st in Plumbing).

This event involved pupils from a wide range of schools within the SELB competing against each other in different vocational areas so well done to all our partcipating pupils. Principal Neil Megaw stated "I am very proud of these 4 guys who are really benefiting from our collaborative vocational programme. This success once again proves that Newtownhamilton High School can compete with the very best".
23/01/15 - Record Numbers Attend Open Night

The staff and pupils of Newtownhamilton High School opened the doors to the Primary 6 & 7 pupils and parents from the surrounding area for Open Night on Thursday 22 January. Record numbers meant that additional seating was required as recently appointed Principal Neil Megaw welcomed everyone in attendance before speaking about the unique educational experience that Newtownhamilton High has to offer.

Mr Megaw highlighted the benefits of the small country school and referred to the recent examination results (in 2013/14, 90% of pupils gained 5 GCSE grades at A*-C and 66% when GCSE English and Maths is included) and also the success of the Vocational Enhancement Programme which is delivered every week in collaboration with Southern Regional College, St. Paul's High School Bessbrook and St. Joseph's High School Crossmaglen.

Reference was also made to the wide variety of clubs and societies available and the new 2G pitch and fitness suite (opening in March 2015) that will help to support this extra-curricular provision. The Principal highlighted how this financial investment was further proof of SELB support for a secure future, as had previously been identified in the Post-Primary Area Plans published in January 2013.

Guests were then treated to musical items from GCSE Music pupils Madisson West and Bethany Dundas before there was an opportunity to tour the school and view the facilities and many displays on show while also participating in activities within individual subject departments.

Food always proves to be popular at school events and Open Night was no exception as guests indulged on treats that had been made and or provided by pupils from the Home Economics and French departments.

Prospective parents requiring further information on enrolment, transfer or transport issues should contact Principal Neil Megaw on 02830 878246.

19/01/15 - Year 8 Presented with Bibles

Our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a visit from local Gideons Richard Alexander and Timothy Wilson on Monday 19 January.

Richard and Timothy spoke to the pupils about their faith and how they distribute Bibles to many organisations in both the local and wider community. New Testament Bibles were then presented to all pupils in attendance. A further presentation of a Bible was also made to recently appointed Principal Mr Neil Megaw.

Pictured are Gavin, Abi, Gareth and Chloe following the presentation of their Bible.

19/01/15 - DIY Maths

Our Year 11 Essential Skills Application of Number pupils recently travelled with their teacher Mr A Cousins to the B&Q store in Newry. The purpose of their visit was to carry out research on the different types, colours and cost of paint so that it can be included in their portfolios which they are currently working on.

Of course the breakfast in the nearby McDonalds restaurant made the trip a bit more enjoyable for Andrew, Ethan & Ryan.
15/01/15 - RAF College Band Visits Newtownhamilton High

The hills of Newtown were certainly alive with the sound of music this morning, as a packed assembly hall enjoyed a tremendous concert given by the Royal Air Force College Band. With the whole of Newtownhamilton High School, local primary school pupils and friends of Newtownhamilton High School in attendance, the cobwebs were certainly blown away. What a treat for everyone to experience these world class musicians in full flight!

The band, who are on a tour of Northern Ireland, visiting specially selected schools, had everyone toe-tapping and clapping along. Popular tunes, including Avicii “Wake me up,” Frozen’s “Let it go,” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” were definitely favourites with the audience.

It was certainly a special occasion too for 5 of our own musicians from Newtownhamilton High School: Gareth Knight, Hannah Calvin, Alyson Henry, Lisa Henry and Ruth Ferris. These pupils were given the privilege of playing with the band, and I’m sure the pupils will all agree this was an experience they will never forget! The pupils were highly commended by the RAF band members for their efforts and musicianship, and they should be encouraged now to practice hard! Well done to all five pupils who were involved – you certainly did Newtownhamilton High School proud!
12/01/15 - Work Begins On New 2G Pitch

The planned completion date of the project is 20/03/15.

Principal Neil Megaw stated "I am delighted that work has commenced on our new 2G pitch. This facility will prove beneficial to our pupils during morning and lunch breaks while it will also enhance our options for Physical Education and extra-curricular activities. There has been a recent surge of interest in hockey in the local area and this new facility will only help to develop the raw talent both in our school and at Tullyvallen Hockey Club".
