12/11/20 – A Very Different Internal Prize Distribution

The small scale nature of Newtownhamilton High School enabled us to host a short Internal Prize Distribution yesterday afternoon for the 2019/20 Year 8-11 pupils. This event, which adhered to all current Government and Department of Education guidance, was important in order to recognise the success of our pupils during the 2019/20 school year up until our forced school closure on 20th March.

There is no doubt that things were very different this year with pupils seated in year group bubbles, regular hand sanitising, wearing of face masks, no parents/guardians in attendance and only 2 external visitors in the form of guest speaker Mr Ivan Bingham (Chairperson of the Board of Governors) and Rev Robert McClure, with the latter delivering a short act of worship during the proceedings.

During his address, Mr Bingham referred to the unusual times that our young people are experiencing and reflected on some of the more significant events that he experienced as a young boy growing up in the Newtownhamilton area during the 1960s. After congratulating pupils, Mr Bingham presented pupils (no hand shaking involved) with awards for class performance, merit totals, Accelerated Reader, attendance, subject achievements and sport.

In addition to the contributions of Mr Bingham and Rev McClure, special thanks goes to Year 12 pupil Sarah Watson for her piano performance.

Despite the success of this event, a decision has been taken to postpone the 2019/20 Year 12 Prize Evening that was scheduled for Thursday 19th November as it involves too many external visitors thus increasing the risk of COVID-19 spreading within our community. The planning for this event is almost complete and we are therefore hopeful that it can be held at a later date during the school year – further info to follow.
