26/03/14 - B&Q Visit for Year 11 Pupils
Year 11 Essential Skills Application of Number pupils recently made a visit to the B&Q store in Newry. The purpose of this trip was to gather information on the different types, colours and cost of paint so that it can be included in the portfolio which pupils are currently working on.
Gathering all this information helped pupils to work up an appetite and so a stop at the nearby McDonalds on the return journey to Newtownhamilton was a necessity!

13/03/14 - COIN Website
Vice Principal and Careers Co-ordinator Mr N Megaw recently attended the launch of the updated COIN (Career Opportunities in Newry) website at the impressive MJM Interior Build at Carnbane Business Park, Newry.
The revamped site was officially launched by Mr Mervyn Storey MLA and provides information on the many local career opportunities which are available within the ever important STEM subjects. The website also features interviews with employees in a range of STEM job roles in the following local organisations - Norbrook, MJM Interior Build, Re-Gen, B/E Aerospace and Daisy Hill Hospital.
It is hoped that this invaluable local careers resource will provide pupils with an online tool to assist them when selecting their future career path.
11/03/14 - Year 11 Work Experience
Year 11 pupils got to sample the world of work last week as they participated in Work Experience that is delivered as part of the school CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance) programme.
For some it was an early start and a much longer day (compared to school) but it gave all pupils a fantastic insight into potential career paths. Mr Megaw spent time travelling around the country to visit pupils at their different places of work - he even managed to take some photographs as shown below. More photographs can be found on the gallery section of this website.
Finally, a big thank you to all the employers who made the work experience programme possible and ensured that pupils returned to school safe and much better informed about their career choices.

03/03/14 - Extended Schools Literacy Events!
Parents from Newtownhamilton Primary, Cortamlet Primary and Newtownhamilton High have been invited to attend literacy evenings. The purpose of these evenings is to inform and assist parents in helping their children with their Reading and Writing.
The Reading event took place on 25th February 2014. The speaker was Mrs Kate O’Hanlon who worked for many years as a Literacy Adviser for the Southern Education and Library Board and is now a Consultant in such matters. Kate provided parents with strategies for developing the reading skills of their children and a list of popular authors who could develop the language skills of children. A document, which was provided on the night, has been attached which demonstrates how reading skills can be developed. Please download this and if you have any queries please contact Mrs K Robinson (Head of English in Newtownhamilton High).
Another event has been organised for Tuesday 11th March 2014 and it will be held in Cortamlet Primary School at 7.30pm. The focus will be on developing writing skills. We would encourage any parents who may have concerns about their child’s literacy abilities to attend this meeting. Please phone ahead to our school office so that we have accurate catering numbers for the night.
