30/04/12 - LLW Entrepreneur Talk
Year 9, 11 & 12 pupils enjoyed a motivational talk today with Graeme Finnegan, owner of Grounded Espresso Bars, (Newry and Belfast). He discussed how he got his business idea and took the pupils on his exciting journey of how he set his business up – the successes and the pitfalls. His business continues to thrive and we wish him well with his new business venture in Slieve Gullion Forest Park, which opens in mid-May.
Thanks to Graeme for giving up his time to share his experience with us - maybe he has planted a seed for a budding entrepreneur!
27/04/14 - Andrew Wins For Fane
Pupils at Newtownhamilton High School are rewarded with positive behaviour by achieving points for their individual houses of Dorsey, Fane and Whitewater.
Every term the house points are added up and prizes are awarded to individual pupils during assembly. Fane currently leads the way with Andrew Watt achieving the most points during the Spring term.
As we approach Sports Day and the end of the school term it is all to play for with the current standings listed below:
1st - Fane (21865 points)
2nd - Dorsey (20935 points)
3rd - Whitewater (19085 points)
Year 8 pupil Andrew Watt receives a small financial gift from Principal Mr G Mullan for achieving the most house points for Fane during the Spring term.
26/04/12 – RE Visitation
Representative Ministers (Rev Wilson, Rev Hughes and Rev Cardwell) from 3 of the main Churches carried out their annual visit on Thursday 26 April.
After spending some time in Newtownhamilton Primary School, clergy took the opportunity to speak to and question some individual RE classes in Key Stage 3 before reporting back to Principal Mr G Mullan and Vice Principal Mr N Megaw on their very positive experiences - universally they were delighted with the quality of teaching and learning within the RE Department.
Thanks go to all teachers for their hard work in preparing pupils and in particular to Mrs S Porter, her staff and Mrs C Alexander for providing and organising refreshments.
23/04/12 - Work Experience Presentations
Following work experience in March 2012, a number of Year 11 pupils gave a short presentation about their placement to all Year 10 and 11 pupils.
Work Experience is part of the CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance) programme within the school and aims to give pupils the opportunity to sample different work situations in order to support them in making informed decisions about career pathways.
Pictured above is Timmy Walker speaking to Year 10 & 11 pupils about his work placement at Fane Valley
23/04/12 - Parent/Guardian Reminder: ETI Questionnaire
All parents/guardians should have received recent correspondence explaining that Newtownhamilton High School will be inspected by the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) during the week beginning 14 May 2012.
As part of the evidence for the report, the inspection team wants to obtain the views of parents/guardians. A copy of the ETI questionnaire was sent home with your child on Friday 20 April. Parents are reminded that completed questionnaires should be returned to the ETI in the pre-paid envelope no later than Friday 4 May 2012.
18/04/12 - Year 10 Study Skills
Recent feedback from some of our Year 10 Parents at Parents' Night identified the need for a workshop on Study Skills. Therefore in our continued drive for school improvement, the Year 10 pupils benefited from an afternoon workshop on Tuesday 17 April where they investigated what type of learner they were, what revision strategies would suit them best and how to prepare for exams.
Our thanks go to Mary McDermott, who delivered the programme on behalf of Young Enterprise.
18/04/12 - School Policies/Documents Now Available On-line
In response to the feedback from our on-line Parent Survey conducted via this website in October 2011, school policies and relevant documents are now available for parents/guardians to view on the Docs section of this website.
All pupils have been issued with a home letter (dated 18/04/12) that explains how to access this password protected page. A copy of this letter is available below but please note that the username and password have been omitted.
04/02/12 - Duke of Edinburgh In The Snow (In April!)
The Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh pupils travelled to the Mourne Mountains today and experienced snowy conditions (in April!). Despite the arctic chill, an enjoyable day was had by all with some breathtaking scenery as shown in the photos.
A big thank you goes to staff members Mr A Chambers, Miss L Graham and Mr R Gibson for providing supervision.
04/04/12 - Mad Hair Day
The last day of term literally ended in fashion today as pupils and some teachers took part in a Mad Hair and Non-Uniform Day in aid of Sport Relief. Staff Member Derek Riddle was on hand with his camera to capture a few shots of some crazy hairstyles.
02/04/12 - Pupils interview Student Teachers
Some of our pupils recently brushed up on their journalism skills by interviewing Student Teachers Miss Murray and Miss Hadden about their experiences at Newtownhamilton High School.
Stranmillis University College Students Miss Murray and Miss Hadden ended their 5 week placement in the Business Studies/ICT department on Friday 30 March with both staff and pupils wishing them well in their teaching careers.
02/04/12 - Terrific Theatre Trip
Pupils from Key Stages 3 and 4 enjoyed a trip to Belfast Opera House on 29th March 2012 to view the legendary ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell. This play tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. The play is being studied by Year 11 pupils as part of their GCSE English Language Controlled Assessment and proved to be a most exhilarating experience. One of the leading stars of this dramatic and emotive play was Maureen Nolan and pupils were impressed by her powerful voice and acting skills.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 23rd phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance.
No wonder Blood Brothers is now ‘The musical for all time’.
02/01/12 - Deborah Delights Famous Author!
Year 10 pupil, Deborah King, displayed her persuasive writing and artistic skills when she was awarded runner-up in the Cathy Cassidy National Chocolate Competition. Deborah designed an original chocolate ‘Beatrice the Bird’ and received a signed copy of Cathy Cassidy’s novel ‘Marshmallow Sky’. Well done Deborah.
