Prize Distribution Drive Thru at Newtownhamilton High

The annual Prize Night is a significant event in the calendar at Newtownhamilton High and despite several attempts to host it this year, the school’s management team had to concede defeat and accept that an indoor gathering would not be possible due to COVID-19.

Despite this disappointment, the pandemic has meant that schools have had to be flexible and think outside the box and as a result a decision was made to host a Prize Distribution Drive Thru, which took place in very pleasant spring weather conditions on Wednesday 14th April.

The organisation of this event, which adhered to all current Government and Department of Education COVID-19 regulations, was important in order to recognise the success of the ‘Class of 2020’ up until the forced school closure on 20th March 2020. However, things were very different this year with regular hand sanitising, wearing of face masks, social distancing, no speeches, no handshaking and only 1 visitor in the form of Mr Ivan Bingham (Chairperson of the Board of Governors).

Reflecting on the success of the Drive Thru, Principal Neil Megaw stated “The 2019/20 school year ended very abruptly for our Year 12 pupils and so we felt that this event would recognise the excellent contribution of the Class of 2020 throughout their time with us. It was great to see everyone again and I offer my best wishes to all pupils for the future. I am confident that the knowledge and experiences gained during their time at Newtownhamilton High will prove beneficial for the years ahead”.
